Abstract: | This article evaluates economic, political and national institutional explanations for continued resistance to the multidivisional form in France, Germany and the United Kingdom During the 1980s ant 1990s. The findings suggest that the economics of different diversification strategies are central in the structural choices of large corporations. The political interests of personal, banking and government owners are exercised changingly. There is strong national influences on structural choices, with opposition to the multidivisional from especially in Germany. The results suggest there is need for increased contextual sensitivity in management research while admitting the possibility of convergent processes in business organization, represented by the slow progress of the multidivisional firm. |
