Abstract:This paper presents some of the dangers of downsizing in which organizations experience an unanticipated and unwanted loss of core competencies. An option, called organizational de-development, is offered. It means slowly and deliberately moving to a lower order of organized complexity, preserving fundamental core competencies and supporting functions. Conditions under which de-development can be recommended are also identified.
