Abstract: | West German savings banks are powerful and have a network all over the country. Together with the regional Landesbanken they form a large, publicly-owned segment of West German banking. Their main rivals are the commercial banks, the co-operative banks and first of all, the post office banks. Pressure on these banks are rising and there is a tendency to transform them into 'universal' banks For example, the head of the Landesgirokasse Stuttgart proposed a new legal form to them, which would enable them to reach new investors. The proposal is hotly discussed in the movement. |
