Abstract:The pending 1992 reform of the EEC means much stronger competition to the French system of the savings bank, called Squirrel. The deregulation of the banking system has already begun. From Summer of 1987 the savings banks were allowed to lend to small and medium- sized enterprises. In exchange for that concession, these banks will be gradually brought into the tax system. The French are becoming selective about where to put their disposable funds. The main loser is the government- guaranteed, tax-free Passbook A.
