Abstract:Structural unemployment in the United Kingdom reflects the persistent disequilibria in its labour markets. Changes in relative wages in regions of high unemployment are influenced by unemployment but are insufficient to remove the disequilibria. There are many types of structural unemployment, and Standing's 1983 classification into technological, mismatch of skills, geographical mismatch, demographic shifts, institutional rigidities, "unemployability", and capital restructuring is used to assess their relative importance in the United Kingdom. They all hinder labour market adjustment, and some of these constitute major obstacles to the use of either neo-classical or Keynesian policies for reducing unemployment.
