Abstract:Since 1987 trade unions have been a crucial party to social partnership agreements in Ireland. Theoretical and empirical studies of corporatism highlight positive outcomes for trade unions such as increased union density, ease of recognition, and employer support. Nevertheless, apart from modestly increased number of union memberships, none of these outcomes actually realised. Union density levels have decreased substantially, union recognition is more problematic than ever, and employer opposition seems to have increased both in scope and intensity. Decline in union density challenges the capacity of unions to stay pivotal actors in the future. In the period of partnership private sector union density more than halved, remaining to be the paradox of partnership.
