Abstract: | Firms within strategic (here as: str.) groups (as: s-gp./s-gps.) generally adopt similar str. recipes, competing more intensely than firms across s-gps. This study develops the concept of hybrid s-gps., which blend the str. recipes of more than one group, contrasting to existing conceptualizations of s-gps. where either firms tightly follow the recipes of a s-gp. (that is, core firms) or firms loosely follow the recipes of a s-gp. (namely, secondary firms). Thus, competition among firms depends both on the s-gp. and on the overlap of that s-gp. with other s-gps. A combinatorial optimization-based classification procedure is built utilizing a bilinear model accommodating multiple variable batteries that can estimate hybrid s-gps. Archival data on public banks is used for illustration of the proposed methodology. The hybrid s-gp. solution outperforms ordinary cluster analyses, offering critical insights into the nature of competition among firms. |
