Abstract:In this article, it is indicated that companies do not necessarily postpone investment decisions. This finding is due to three motivations: securing competitive resources, leveraging complementary resources, and moderating institutional pressure. These motivations are connected to fundamental principles of the resource-based view and institutional theory and further indicate the existence of a regime where institutionally motivated and resource-based actions are not necessarily separated. The research is based on a case study of the German power generation industry which encounters regulatory uncertainty from the European CO2 Emission Trading Scheme.
