Abstract:A method based on similarity of image and cross-shopping behaviour is proposed and tested on two substantial data bases. Earlier theory on brand switching led to a concept of cross shopping where shoppers were expected to cross shop more between retailers seen as different. The paper demonstrates that perceived difference is a determinant of cross-shopping behaviour but that different patterns of cross-shopping behaviour are apparent, depending upon the retailer. In one, cross shopping is increased to those retailers seen as similar; in the other, cross shopping is decreased to those retailers seen as similar.
