| Abstract: | The special characteristics of the energy economies in developing countries are discussed with a view to sustainable development. The crucial role played by rural energy in these countries is given special attention. It is argued that the road towards sustainable development is a complex one. Further development of appropriate institutions, attitudes and technical options is required. More analysis is needed on how to approach optimal solutions and how to balance conflicting interests. Research on the effects of pricing policies, the functioning of the market and institution building are highly relevant for developing countries. The key elements lie in policies promoting the effective management of energy demand. |
