Abstract:Feeling the force of globalisation, the traditional model of permanent, full-time, nine-to-five employment is being replaced rapidly be flexible, short-term contract working - a source of new and different types of stress. Cary Cooper discusses what employers and employees can do to make the best of the situation. A recent article in the Economist focused on a possible backlash in the US against the shift in employment practices caused by globalisation - a phenomenon that is leading to greater employee mobility, more job insecurity, a "short-term contract" culture and, ultimately, the virtual organisation.
