Title:How to strengthen the connection between research and teaching in undergraduate university education

Abstract:This paper examines how to strengthen the research-teaching nexus (hereafter as: r-t-nxs.) in university education, and especially, how to improve the relation btw. policy and practice. The focus is on courses and curricula for undergraduate students (here as: u-students). Based on a review of policy documents and research literature, it turned out that the r-t-nxs. can be shaped according to two dimensions: 1. concerning an emphasis on either the research content and products, or the research processes and problems, 2. concerning the role of students as either learning existing insights, or as 'participants in research'. It is concluded that if a university will choose to strengthen the r-t-nxs. in u-students' curricula, it implies more often students' involvement in the role of research participants.
