Abstract:A systematic procedure is provided for improving existing mixed integer model formulations. A theory of problem reformulation based on relating the decision variables of two different models by means of a linear transformation, and the methodology for reformulating the special structure problem is applied in several settings, including network modeling, disjunctive programming and generalized linear programming. The linear relaxation of the reformulated model gives bounds superior to those generated from the problems from which they were derived. The result is significant within the context of linear programming-based branch-and-bound modeling approaches.
