Abstract:Employee assistance programs (EAPS) to rehabilitate troubled employees are examined. EAPs tailored to the individual company needs are discussed. The role of managers' involvement is stressed. Management training programs are necessary. A General Motors study of absenteeism is reviewed. Abuse of both legal and illegal drugs as a special problem area is mentioned. Establishing clear policies on the use of alcohol and other licit or illicit drugs is recommended. Sensitive management, a dynamic EAP, and a consistent government support together could effectively help employees experiencing problems.
