Abstract:France is one of the few countries, that already meets the requirements necessary for joining the European Monetary Union. Cost and price increases are moderate, real GDP in 1991 was 1.2 p.c. higher than one year before; however, economic growth was 2.8 p.c. in that year. The slowing down of the economic growth cannot be explained by external factors. Inflation is lower in France than the average in the EC since the 1980s due to the reorientation of the economic policy of the government. However, this policy, to proovide considerable economic growth through stimulation of the demand, has reahed its limits in the meantime.
