Abstract:In most Western European countries, the monetary restriction adhered to in the final phase of the upswing was less marked than in the overseas economies, as can be seen from the ongoing moderate growth of money supply. Here the economic development is still being supported by the improvement of supply-side factors in the 1980s. Since the world economic conditions will improve - fostered by recovery in the USA-, and also in some Western European countries interest rates are lower now than at their climax in 1990, consumers and enterprises should gradually expand demand, and enforce it in the course of next year, supported by further monetary relaxation.
