Abstract:On the basis of existing data on foreign direct investment (FDI) in Central European economies in transition, the paper evaluates some aspects of FDI development implications for these economies. Too high expectations about FDI development implications could lead to a kind of restrictive reaction which would limit future inflow of greenfield FDI. In spite of modest inflow of FDI in Central European economies in transition , it seems that FDI has been instrumental in assisting transformation of these economies. FDI is, however more a supportive than a major instrument of the transformation. Local entrepreneurs, realistic expectations and conducive long term policies are crucial preconditions for performing such a role.
