Abstract:The economic expansion in the industrial countries has continued in the course of this year, but the upswing has lost some momentum. Real GDP rose at an annual rate of 2 p.c. during the first six months, after 3 p.c. in the second half of 1994. Especially in the United States , the increase in production was markedly lower after monetary policy had been tightened. In western Europe, capacity utilization rose again; but due to a less expansionary monetary policy and a slower buildup of stocks the improvement was not strong as during last year. Nevertheless, the recovery has broadened since private investment activity has strengthened.
