Abstract:From browsing through past Economic Journals one major conclusion emerges as a prelude to peering into the next century: the substance of professional economic discussion has remained remarkably unchanged over the past century. In addition, the scope of the economics literature has narrowed in some dimensions, widened in others. There has been little change in the major issues occupying the attention of economists: they are very much the same as those that Adam Smith dealt with more than two centuries ago. The subjects that were dealt with in the first and ninety-ninth volume of the Journal, labour, money, doctrinal history, and socialism, will in one form or another be represented in the 19th.
