Abstract:After a brief look at the past, the author speculates about the next fifty years and the challenges of the future. Human societies will face huge problems, some of which react on priorities that ought to be respectively assigned to different economic questions. The three trends the author sees as particularly critical are as follows. First, the limitation of resources will increasingly raise concern. Secondly, acute problems may result from inequality of conditions; the most disturbing problems are likely to follow from international unequalities. Thirdly, the integration of markets in the main regions of the world is likely to pose new challenges. Economics is badly prepared and it will be refocused to meet the challenges.
