Abstract:The purpose of the paper is to assess what we have learned from theory about the determinants of growth, and to examine where we should look for insights in the future. Advances since the Hahn - Matthews survey are considered as well as the lessons from the developing countries. The study of growth is generally about the medium or long run, it is about the accumulation of physical capital, the progress of skills, ideas and innovation, the growth of population, how factors are combined and managed, etc. It is principally about the supply side. The emphasis in the literature on the long run and on technical progress has led to only limited advancement in understanding. The author is influenced by experiences of developing countries.
