Abstract:An international comparison of competitiveness of high technology products is provided for a relatively long period (1967-1988). There are seven OECD countries and four Asian countries involved in this comparison. Japanese products proved to be the most competitive throughout the whole period. They are followed by the products of the Federal Republic of Germany, the four Asian countries and the USA all lagging far behind. Both the favourable and unfavourable positions are explained. The role of a number of factors (availability of natural resources, specialization, subsidies, adjustment to the requirements of international markets) is examined. The strategies of Japanese companies are characterized.
