Abstract:The emergence of low-cost internet-enabled distribution channels has caused hotel managers to consider whether to manage the distribution channel, along with rate and length of stay, in trying to achieve optimum revenue. Using a computer simulation, the authors examined the potential of distribution-channel management to enhance the contribution to gross profit from room sales. Although some distribution channels are more expensive than others (in terms of royalties and commissions), managing the actual channel used to distribute rooms is less important than focusing on the key drivers of revenue management, which remain rate and length of stay.
