Abstract:With a projected 15 million Europeans expected through the Channel Tunnel, a domestic tourist market ripe for expansion and battling giant companies, the UK hotel industry is in transition. The combination of an expanding market with a diminishing number of marketers may promise easy opportunities. A search is going on for market niches to add to corporate brand-lists. These are derived e.g. from the growth of the proportion of old people. The most popular candidate for brand expansion in the UK is the budget sector. The budget hotel aims to attract a peripatetic audience by offering a bedroom-only service at low prices through reduced construction costs and minimisation of staff/guest ratios.
