Abstract:A study of the cutting-stock problem faced by a small company in the building components industry in Singapore is concerned. Before the heuristics procedure as described in the paper was introduced, the company had experienced great difficulties in controlling the trim-loss level. With the installation of the heuristic procedure on the company's supermicro computer, the company is now able to relieve the production scheduler of the laborious task of deciding what stock lengths to order. The pattern-generating heuristic has been tested using real-life project data.
