Abstract:A perceptual measure of technology is developed and applied in an R and D work context. Twelve perceptually based characteristics of technology formed the basis for a questionnaire circulated to R and D team leaders in telecommunications and space technology. Analysis of data revealed that while certain characteristics seemed to constitute the "core" of technology, the dominance of certain others varied between teams from the two areas of R and D. This suggests that managerial implications from the perception of technology should be drawn with specific reference to the context. Further work with larger samples might enable the statistical validation of the differences revealed by this survey.
