Abstract:There is often a considerable gulf in understanding between the leaders of industrial R&D enterprises and the business-unit managers who should be our partners in innovation. There have been two important trends in recent US corporate economic life that have joined to widen this gap and make it more difficult to close. The first is the move toward diversified strategic business unit management. The second major trend is external. Global competition has raised the stakes on innovation. Successful companies are now required to accomplish rapid innovation and product introduction.
