Abstract:In this article the author examines in theory and practice the level of R&D collaboration through local networking and technology transfer with high-technology small firms (HTSFs.) The author examines why HTSFs are formed and how they perform R&D in order to cope with the competitive environment. The value of external collaborative R&D and internal R&D management are explored in such settings as; concentrated incubators, clusters, or science parks. The findings suggest that while R&D collaboration with external actors and HTSFs does happen, it is most common that HTSF firms internalise their R&D as it is seen as highly confidential and valuable process.
