Abstract:The results of in-depth case studies of international R and D management in four Swedish multinational corporations are summarized. It is shown how changes in the international scene are forcing these companies to decentralize their R and D activities. It was found that the traditional way of management - via an informal network - no longer works. A more structured form of management is shown to be necessary. The most important recommendation is that the centre should take on a strategic role, balancing the portfolio and monitoring the quality of the R and D output. At the same time, subsidiaries should be allowed to carry full responsibility for use of the funds provided and for detailed management of their programmes.
