Abstract:The paper investigates the popular "loose-tight principle" of organizing the new product innovation process on the basis of data from 70 standardized interviews with firms. According to this principle, loose structures should create a climate of creativity for generating ideas in the beginning of the innovation process whereas tight structures help to achieve planned contribution in the end of the process. Although plausible at the first glance, the application of this principle in practice has only been found very rarely. Furthermore, the results show that there is no positive correlation between "loose-tight" structures and innovation success.
