Abstract: | Putting forward a critical analysis of the R&D performance of the USA industry, first, the corporate planning context within which the R&D proposals and achievements are evaluated are explored. It is argued that the central goal of the R&D programs in wide sectors of USA industry have tended to emphasize incremental improvements in products and processes which seem achievable within relatively short periods. Prospective advances are discussed in five sectors of R&D management: planning of R&D programs; designing R&D project portfolios; developing R&D staffs; appraising project contributions; and more effectively integrating R&D into corporate operations and planning. |
