Abstract: | Four ways of measuring the impact of a renewed approach to R&D in the GE (General Electric Company) R&D Center are described. There has been a dual emphasis at the R&D Center: internally, to increase the freedom and initiative of researchers to come up with more new ideas and do more exploratory research; externally, an increased emphasis on effectively marketing R&D to the company's businesses. The need grows to give answers to the question: how do we know our research is as productive as it should be? Therefore it is important to assess the contribution R&D brings to the company, to count outputs, analyze technology transitions and to use the "free market measurement". |
