Abstract:This study shows that the introduction of conventional insurance policies increases the equilibrium price of health care and that if the supply of health care is sufficiently price-inelastic, the increase in price always leads to a reduction in consumer welfare, by explicitly considering the conditions and responses in the health care market. If there is a huge increase in the price of health care, people in the health care sector will enjoy substantial income increases, which makes any conclusion on the overall welfare impacts difficult to draw.
