Abstract:A widespread acceptance that there is a general positive correlation between "social support" and well-being appears to exist. Individuals' health may remain better and their recovery from certain diseases more likely when potential, if not actual, social support is available. This article addresses two specific methodological problems. First, it conducts comparative analysis to find a common meaning for the term "social support". Then, it addresses the question of explaining why some societies are "healthier" than others by reviewing Wilkinson's thoughts on the subject.
