Abstract:Considering small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) there can be found notable differences in their response to the opportunities and threats in international markets. This paper indicates that SMEs' ownership and governance systems affect importantly the development of knowledge-based resources required in internationalization. A positive relationship between both the equity held by top management and venture capitalists and the development of such resources is found on a study of 384 US SMEs. In addition, the presence of independent outside directors on SMEs' boards seems to increase the positive relationship.
