Abstract:This paper develops a structural model of innovation incorporating information on innovation success from firm surveys with the R&D expenditures and productivity measures. Using data from 1995 to 2003 on Italian SMEs from the "Survey on Manufacturing Firms" (performed by Mediocredito-Capitalia), it is found that international competition fosters R&D intensity, particularly for high-tech firms. Firm size and R&D intensity, along with investment in equipment, enhances the likelihood for both process and product innovation which have a positive impact on a firm's productivity, in particular on process innovation. Older and larger firms seem to be less productive among SMEs.
