Abstract:Based on yearly panel data from more than 50 government-supported strategic networks (hereafter as: n-w/s.) of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) during a 5-year period, this study explores the effects of compensating n-w/s. board members. Endorsing a contingency approach, the agency and stewardship (herein as: stw.) literatures are combined to posit that the effects of compensation are moderated by contingency factors stimulating either an agency or stw. relationship btw. the n-w/s. board and the networking firms. It is indicated that significant funding, n-w/s. firms represented on the n-w/s. board, and top-down n-w/s. formation stimulate board members to become agents rather than stewards. Hence, this explains the higher effect of board member compensation under such conditions.
