Abstract: | An overview of the situation in Germany after the unification is presented through personal interviews by several people across the country. The author found that Germans already united in their determination to rebuild the Eastern economy, eliminate its poverty, overcome its past, and make Germany once again the most dynamic and prosperous nation in Europe. He also found plenty of problems, but not the deep misgivings and fear of disparity so widely reported in the press. He learned that the challenges facing Germany today are no match for the country's optimism and appetite for work. Germans seem full of confidence, relief, and resolve. Unification may be a trauma for Western Europe, but for Germany it is less burden than a joy. |
