Abstract:France, in many ways, is the cradle of grocery retail power in Europe, with fierce price competition the hallmark of the retail chains. Competitive retail prices have been achieved via aggressive buying where increases in organisational size have been the chosen lever to acquire buying power. Relations with suppliers have deteriorated as a consequence. The emergence of buying groups was an early response to the quest for buying performance, and today two of the leading chains (Leclerc and Intermarche) remain groupings of independent retailers.
