Abstract:This empirical study examines the patenting activity of the academic researchers of the French University of Louis Pasteur. The results of the study suggest a positive relation between publishing and patenting. Academic status and patenting, however, are not positively related, due to which faculty members tend to patent only in the later stages of their academic career. Also the research organization is found to have a significant importance in the process of inventing and patenting: the bigger a research laboratory is and the more it has contractual funds, the higher is the laboratory's propensity to patent. Especially contractual funds from private sources are found to be positively related to patenting activity.
