Abstract:An EC survey is used to introduce this paper with some significant environmental public opinion items. Economics and the environment (economic growth, the Club of Rome's view etc) are discussed. The need for marketing activity and political action is demonstrated by discussing green consumers, collective consumer pressure, ecologically unacceptable products, new opportunities for marketers and for researchers. The idea of sustainable development is analysed, the three basic lessons - consumers and citizens (the need of individual and collective action) the inadequacy of market economics and the need for global action - are explained.
