Abstract:One of the models of career stages has identified the four stages most people experience and has discussed the typical challenges that occur during each stage. An analysis of the career paths of 230 chief executive officers of large industrial firms revealed certain consistent patterns of career development. In consequence six distinct phases of career development were identified. They include: exploration, development, commitment, verification, payback and payoff. The findings of this study should provide useful guidelines for the upwardly mobile manager as well as for the top executives and human resource managers concerned with developing future business leaders.
