Abstract:Fluctuations are studied in output, prices, and money in ten countries for which at least a century of annual data are available. The cyclical behavior of components of national output is also examined: private consumption expenditures, fixed investment, government purchases of goods and services, and net export. The authors' objective is to document some of the salient features of business cycles. The ten countries differ in their institutions, monetary and fiscal policies, industrial compositions and structures, and average aggregate growth rates. The question is whether they share similar features of business cycles, despite these differences.
