Abstract:The process of conceptualizing, developing and implementing new and improved work practices and products constitutes an essential means of responding proactively to external change. Yet capacities for innovation within organizations at both the individual and the work team levels are too often underdeveloped and undervalued. It is shown how the National Health Service management has responded to pressure for change as a "critical case site" for investigation of the importance of innovativeness. Four significant factors facilitating innovation are identified: vision, participative safety, a climate for excellence, and support for innovation. A program of recommended practical interventions is described.
