Abstract:Product innovations are traditionally viewed as the life- blood of corporations, yet little but cursory evidence exists as to the valuation of the innovative activity of firms. This research provides evidence that the financial marketplace is very efficient at evaluating and synthesizing information about firms' product and service innovations. During the period 1975-1988, product innovations are estimated to have increased the value of innovating firms by more than $ 10 billion. In addition, much of this increase in value is seen to accrue to firms in technologically-intensive industries and firms that are introducing truly unique innovations.
