Abstract: | The scope of industrial research in the US and the role of research managers has expanded significantly during the last two decades. With the growth of strategic planning in the early 1970s, many research managers were challenged to work within the mainstream management processes in the corporation to couple the output of their laboratories more effectively to the business needs of operations. Significant progress has been made in many companies by working through the generic questions involved in transforming business objectives and strategies into core technical competence and program priorities for the research laboratory. |
