Abstract:This reply challenges W.K.Darley and J.-S.Lim's conclusions that an earlier article of T.Shimp, E.M.Hyatt, and D.J.Snyder misleads consumer researchers about the role and treatment of demand artifacts and that their analysis regarding G.J.Gorn's experiments are flawed. The authors of this article also question Darley and Lim's proposals for minimizing demand artifacts. The purposes of this reply are to demonstrate that Darley and Lim's criticisms of Shimp et al. are exaggerated, and to show that their suggestions for dealing with demand artifacts provide little useful direction for consumer researchers.
