Abstract:The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) provides ratings for most commercially released films. This rating system aims to be a useful guide to help parents in monitoring their children's viewing. Four assumptions inherent in the MPAA scheme are identified. It is shown how these assumptions are inconsistent with research evidence on the impact of certain media portrayals on young viewers. An alternative scheme is offered which would provide parents with much-meeded information about the content of films.
