| Abstract: | The completion of the single European market and the decision for the Economic and Monetary Union were based on optimism concerning the future of Europe. However, the crisis of the European Monetary System and the deep recession in the member states of the European Union caused a growing Euro-scepticism in the meantime. The article examines the origin of the recent problems of the process of integration in the framework of an analysis of the first five yearsof the Economic and Monetary Union. The alternatives that are at the disposal of Europe and the fiscal convergence objectives indispensable for the realization of the Monetary Union are also considered. |
