| Abstract: | Financial services are an important part of the single market, accounting for about 7% of the GDP of the twelve and providing some 3 million jobs. While existing directives allow banks and insurance companies to operate throughout the EU under home-state control, the legislative framework governing financial services is still being put into place. Two major directives, covering investment services and capital adequancy of investment companies, were adopted last year but will not come into force until 1996. |
